SHARON LYNN MCKINNON
Sharon Lynn McKinnon passed away peacefully on May 9, 2026, with family by her side.
Sharon was the firstborn of parents Alice and Jack Thompson. She would later become the big sister to five brothers and five sisters.
Sharon was a gifted student who graduated from high school at 16. Her dream was to become a registered nurse, but she couldn't begin training until she was 18. So, Sharon took on two years of teaching on a permit at Camper, Manitoba, in a one-room school with grades one to eight. Then, from 1958 to 1961, she attended St. Boniface Hospital nursing school and earned her RN designation.
Sharon worked as a nurse in many capacities and locations over the years and retired from St. Boniface Hospital at 72, bringing her career full circle. She was well known for her dedication and compassion as a nurse.
Sharon and Perry married in August 1961. After a short stay in Winnipeg, they made their home in Summerside, PEI where Perry was stationed as an RCAF pilot. Their family grew with the addition of Jeffrey Scott in November 1962. Kelly Lynn was born in Swan River in February 1965, while the family was in the process of moving to Richmond, BC. There, Perry joined Canadian Pacific Airlines and Sharon worked at Richmond General Hospital. After Sharon and Perry separated in 1972, Sharon worked full time while also raising Jeff and Kelly.
Sharon was a devoted mother who ensured her children had many memorable experiences and time with their large extended family. She loved to travel and instilled this passion in her children. Sharon also enjoyed music and dancing, especially at family gatherings. Family was very important to her, and she cherished time spent with her children and adored her grandchildren, Tara and Andrew. Watching sports - especially baseball and the Blue Jays - was a favourite pastime. She also loved gardening and collecting antiques and knick-knacks.
Sharon was predeceased by her brother Jack; sisters-in-law Phyllis and Paulina; brothers-in-law Larry Campbell and Ray Rooks; nephew Kristen Rooks; and her parents, Alice and Jack Thompson.
She is survived by her son Jeffrey (Irene); daughter Kelly, granddaughter Tara (Charles), and grandson Andrew (Myriama); brothers Bill, Brent, Brian (Zoe), and Keith (Roxanne); sister-in-law Carrol; sisters Mona Campbell, Vivian Rooks, Rhonda (Tim) Peterson, Colleen (Max) Walker, and Wendy (Richard) Gingras; and many nieces and nephews.
Gifts to honour Sharon may be made to the St. Boniface Hospital Foundation. Sharon was trained at St. Boniface, worked there, and passed there.
